The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) has marked the third edition of its Fruits and Fitness Day, hosting simultaneous activities at its centres in Kumasi, Kwabenya, Adenta, McCarthy, Takoradi and Tamale.
The event, themed “Promoting Wellness Through Play, Learning and Healthy Living,” brought staff together for a day of physical activity, healthy eating and team bonding, with participants wearing branded T-shirts.
Kumasi Centre began with a walk from the IDL premises to the tennis court, where about 50 staff members, many first-time players, were introduced to the basics of tennis. Guided by professional coaches, they learned ball control, forehand techniques and volleying, ending with a fruit feast and a brisk walk back to the office.

At the Kwabenya Centre, staff joined a professionally supervised 45-minute fitness session combining cardiovascular workouts, flexibility training and team-based exercises. Afterward, they shared a fruit buffet “reinforcing the day’s message of healthy living and balanced nutrition.”

The Adenta Centre opened with warm-up exercises, jumping jacks, stretching, short races and group games. Staff feedback was “overwhelmingly positive,” with many noting improved morale and “a desire for more frequent wellness events.”

At McCarthy, the day began with a motivational address, followed by a walk to the summit of McCarthy Hill and around the community. Back at the centre, aerobic routines, dancing, and indoor games such as Ludo, Oware and Scrabble kept spirits high. A colourful fruit display, including bananas, mangoes, pineapples and apples, refreshed participants after the workout.

Takoradi Centre took fitness to the beach, with workouts and swimming sessions “amidst the cool sea breeze.” A variety of fruits replenished energy and “promoted healthy metabolism,” making the event both relaxing and revitalizing.
At Tamale, football and aerobics dominated the day, “promoting physical wellbeing and team spirit.” Afterward, participants enjoyed a variety of fresh fruits.
IDL Director Professor Anthony Andrews said the event underscored the institute’s commitment to staff wellbeing.
“A healthy workforce is a productive workforce. I am proud of the enthusiasm our staff bring to these initiatives, and we remain dedicated to nurturing an environment where both minds and bodies thrive,” he said.
